Magazine:Tatler CSP case study

INTRODUCTION:

1) Look at the Tatler Media Pack. Go to page 2: how does the editor introduce the magazine?The editor introduces Tattler as ‘‘TATTLER IS A FABULOUSLY TARGETED, SENSATIONALLY ACCURATE RIFLE SHOT TO THE VERY RICHEST READERS IN THE COUNTRY. THESE PEOPLE LIVE THE LIFE REFLECTED ON OUR PAGES, BOTH PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL. AND BOY, DO THEY LOVE TO SHOP”

2} Now go to page 4 of the Media Pack. Focus on the print magazine (NOT tattler.com - the website). List the key demographic details: age, gender %, ABC1 % (social class), HHI (Household Income), % of those living in London and the South East. What do these demographic details suggest about the average Tattler reader?  

  • The average HHI is 261,572
  • Female 73% ABC 83%
  • AB 51% average age 41%
3) Look at page 6. What do Tattler readers think about fashion? How much do they spend?
They spend 843 million on fashion in the past year. ‘I OFTEN BUY FASHION PRODUCTS AFTER SEEING THINGS ADVERTISED IN MAGAZINES’ (INDEX 126)

4) Go to page 10. What are the special editions of Tattler that run throughout the year? What does this suggest about the Tattler audience? What about the pyschographic audience group that best fits Tattler? The special editions of tattler are:Travel guide(JANUARY), Weddings guides( MARCH), Beauty and cosmetic surgery guide(APRIL), Spa guide(JUNE), Watches and jewellery(JULY), School guide(OCTOBER).

MEDIA LANGUAGE:

1) What different examples of typography can you find on the cover of Tatler? What are the connotations of the serif and sans serif fonts? The magazine tattler contains serif, sans serif fonts. The magazine used serif on the word 'Tattler'  to attract attention  to the magazine.Sans is used around the magazine cover so people could read it effortlessly.                                                                                                 

2) How do the cover lines appeal to the Tatler target audience? The cover lines appeal to the rich as its something that would match their interest.  The cover lines target audience are people of importance such as the Royal Family,Boris jhonson and fashion designers. 

3) What are the connotations of the Tatler colour scheme on this particular front cover? The colour scheme contains vibrant colours such as pink,green and blue.This connotes that the photo shoot was taking during summer time.


4) How is the central image designed to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. the model, the mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression etc.) The central image is designed to create interest in the magazine for those of wealth. This is because they share a similar lifestyle as to what they present in the magazine. 

Representations

1) What celebrities, politicians or famous people are mentioned on the cover? Why do you think Tatler put them on the cover?

The people represented on the cover are white and young, the model in the central image and "millennial Sloane" and "gap year" all shows young people which is different to the target audience because the average age of the readers is 40. Also, the model is wearing bold makeup which shows the audience is more edgy, wild and modern. Tattler show case these people to present 

2) What do the cover lines suggest about the lifestyle of rich people in the UK? The cover lines suggest that the upper class have a say in whose going to be at the top of everyone guest list.This also connotes that the lower and middle class will not be able to afford this lifestyle.

3) Looking at the image and cover lines together, what different groups of people are represented on the cover and how are they represented? (E.g. men/women/rich people/race & ethnicity etc.) The stereotype that posh people can't be fun and modern is being subverted because the magazine portrays posh people as people who like to party and have fun and also keep up with all the new trends.

4) Are there any stereotypes being reinforced or subverted? How? Why?


Social and cultural context

1) Find three other front covers for Tatler from different months. What issues, subjects or people are regularly featured in Tatler?

2) Tatler runs special issues on holidays, spa breaks, cosmetic surgery, watches and jewellery and private schools. What does this suggest about the magazine's representation of life in Britain? 

3) What audience groups might be offended or insulted by the front cover of Tatler April 2017?
