Create a new blog post called 'His Dark Materials: Language and Representation blog tasks' and work through the following tasks:

Language and close-textual analysis

1) Write an analysis of the episode - using notes from the screening in class. Make specific, detailed reference to moments in the text using media terminology (e.g. media language - camera shots and movement, editing, diegetic/non-diegetic sound, mise-en-scene etc.)


Camerawork, editing and sound:

different worlds ‘City in the Sky’, cave, rain forest, ocean. Far off exotic locations

2) How does His Dark Materials fit the conventions of the fantasy TV genre?

 His dark material fits the convention of the fantasy TV genre because it includes witches, different worlds.

3) Applying Prop's character theory, what character roles do some of the main characters in His Dark Materials fit into?

Lyra Belacqua fits into prop's character theory as she's the protagonist. Lyra is on the run from her world due to being hunted.

villain- Mrs coulter is dangerous and maintains stability over any situation.

father figure-Lyra's father/ acted like her uncle

4) What enigma and action codes (Barthes) can you find in His Dark Materials? Make specific, detailed reference to the text using media terminology (e.g. media language - camera shots, diegetic/non-diegetic sound, mise-en-scene etc.) 

Non diegetic sound at beginning or recap; music and voice over to be able to set the scene. There's also non diegetic music which  suggests drama or an important moment. Camera shots that are being used are high angle shots of Lyra to make her look innocent and Mrs Coulter to make her look powerful

5) What examples of binary opposition (Levi-Strauss) can you find in His Dark Materials? How do these create narrative or drama for the audience? You can find reminder notes on all these narrative theories here - just scroll down to narrative.  An example binary opposition is good and bad people. This helps show the conflict and narrative of the story.

Representations

1) How are women represented in His Dark Materials? Are gender stereotypes reinforced or subverted? Think about Lyra and Mrs Coulter here. Strong females such as Lyra and Mrs Coulter  are presented as independent and powerful. Mrs Coulter is a powerful villain who maintains order in mission when men cant do their work properly. 

2) How are men and masculinity represented in His Dark Materials? Think about Will and Lee Scoresby here.Men are also presented as aggressive when the magisterium  was throwing a glass. Men are also seen as incompetent hence why Mrs Coulter is deemed as more responsible. 

3) How is age (e.g. teenagers; older people) represented in His Dark Materials? Does the show reinforce or challenge stereotypes about young people? Think about Lyra and Will plus the abandoned children they meet. Also think about Mrs Coulter and other adults.  

Age is represented in his dark materials in many ways. One way is through spectres. This is because it shows the audience its safer being a child  than an adult .

4) How is race and ethnicity represented in His Dark Materials

Are stereotypes reinforced or subverted? Race and ethnicity is diverse in his dark materials 

5) How are politiciansreligion and people with power represented? Think about how the Magisterium are shown in this episode.


Audience
